Creighton F - Doug McDermott

I felt it was due time to give the sophomore is own thread. Doug broke into the scene during the FIBA U-19 World Championship this year. He was team USA's lone White starter. He impressed there and proved himself against the highest level of play. This season Doug is 2nd in the nation in scoring at 24 points per game. He is also averaging 9.1 rebounds per game which is very impressive when you consider he is only 6'-7" and plays small forward. On top of that he is shooting his 3-pointers at a 60% clip right now.

Creighton was ranked #17 before their loss yesterday. If they can remain in the top 25 all season, we could have our "next Jimmer" to follow as Creighton will get attention. By saying that I am not comparing him skill-wise to Jimmer, as they are very different players, but more in the sense that they are top players from mid-majors who can garner national attention.

Good article, but this paragraph is very telling, has the usual caste-speak as well:

Yeah saying he doesn't have the athletecism is a joke. Hayward and Parsons are both as athletic as anyone in the league and in my opinion McDermott is too. He is a hell of an athlete. Another thing that pissed me off was to hear his Dad say that he could never be a teams leading scorer. What kind of b.s. is that? He is only the 5th leading scorer in the long history of the NCAA. If that doesn't tell you he could lead a nba team in scoring, then what would. Dumb statement by his dad. Tell your kid he can be the next Kevin Durant or Kevin Love. Doug McDermott can be as good as any player in the league if they give him the chance to lead the team. He is capable of being an all star. He just needs a team to let him be the man that the offense runs through.

It was certainly a stupid thing for his dad to say. He must have been thinking that it would help him in some way, but it's hard to see how. There are 30 teams in the NBA. McDermott like you said is the 4th leading scorer in NCAA history. And he was playing on a team without another player of even close to his ability. All his opponents knew he was going to get the ball. He's got great range, can put the ball on the floor, and post up. He's got all the tools to be a 20 ppg+ scorer.

Every single highlight I see of this guy leads me to believe he will be another Adam Morrison. Sorry guys, I just don't buy it. All he does is pull up and hit jumpers.

I've seen him dunk quite a few times. He can also penetrate the lane. He's better suited to play Small Forward, but I can see him being used as a 2-guard.
Morrison's problem was his diabetes, he was never healthy.

Sorry for being so pessimistic but I do hope your are right. He just doesn't look like he can dominate on the next level like he does in college.

If he dominates the NBA like he did college he would be the leading scorer in the league. If he just plays effectively and within his abilities he will be the top one or two scorers on his team. He definitely has the potential to score 20 ppg, which would make him one of the top white scorers in the league along with Love, Dirk, Dragic, Ryan Anderson, David Lee, and Pekovic.

The only reason McDermott would not be successful is if he is not given a fair opportunity to play. One only has to look at that mixed-breed Curry to see the double standard. He is an undersized guard given every chance to have the ball, he is not some exceptional talent yet he was given a free pass in the league and spoon fed a starting job.

last summer, McDermott played against the N.B.A. players during his time with the USA development team that played at the World University Games. McDermott was a scoring machine and was rumored to be the only collegiate player the pros couldn't guard.

From what I've seen, McDermott is a versatile scorer, very competitive, highly skilled, aggressive, great player. Not sure how tall he really is. Will probably be a small forward. Although Kevin Love is actually a shade under 6'8", and still plays big and rebounds with power forwards. There's no reason he can't score in the NBA, unless they bury him on the bench, like Fredette.
