2013-14 college basketball season

I tuned into the Duke-Kansas game for a few minutes and the Blue Devils had 5 blacks on the floor. In my 20+ years of watching Duke and college basketball, I've never seen this. Even in the worst of times, Duke always had a couple of white starters. Now they look line an SEC team. What the heck has happened?

Saw that, also heard many different pundits speak about how Duke is a serious title contender now, and how much more "athletic" Duke is than they have been in years past. Hmmm?

Yes foobar75 this stinks and I'm a Duke fan, but I have to correct you, the 1998-1999 team started 5 blacks and 2 blacks came off the bench,

William Avery, Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Trajan Langdon, and Corey Maggette, with Chris Carrawell and Nate James coming off the bench. The only 2 whites that saw any playing time was Chris Burgess and Taymon Domzalski.

I guess Burgess got sick of it, he transferred to Utah, I think.

I guess I won't be watching much college basketball this season.

Yeah the verdict is that Duke is as athletic as they've ever been. That being said their season will be a colossal bust if they don't at least make it to the National Championship. Can they keep up their play like the 2010 National Championship team? I don't think so there is a lot of basketball to be played. One thing that I find very annoying is the media's endorsement of the "phenom freshmen" every year who do decent then make the jump to the NBA and not much is heard since!!

On #8 Oklahoma State, Le'Bryan Nash and Marcus Smart get all the attention but through two games it's 5'-11" sophomore Phil Forte who is the leading scorer. The other "strange" thing is this paleface can't even get himself into the starting lineup. Anyhow he's averaging a point per minute which amounts to 20.5 points per game. Go figure.

In the Wisconsin versus Florida game, the good guys won. Sam Dekker led the way with 16 points. With the win, the Badgers should move into the top 15.

Right. We'll see. This team is nowhere near as good as the 98'/99' team and they lost to UCONN in the finals, or even as good as the 2000/2001 team that won the National Championship that featured Mike Dunleavy, Shane Battier, Carlos Boozer, Jason Williams, and Chris Duhon, all with the exception of Duhon and Williams are still in the NBA.

Williams would still be their if not for an unfortunate motorcycle injury. Duhon was also recently involved in a hit and run and suffered a head injury, continuing what seems to be a Duke curse of players getting injured or in accidents. Bobby Hurley was having a decent NBA career until he was hit by a vehicle that ran a stop sign almost killing him and ending his NBA career.

*Although Hurley played 4 more years in the NBA, he was never the same after his accident.

Well, someone mentioned that Duke doesn't start any White players this year. Apparently that was noticed by ESPN douche bag writer, Mark Titus, who penned an article with the caption "It's Hard to Hate Duke This Year." He states:

"Hating Duke has always been one of those little things in life that puts a smile on my face for reasons I don't fully understand, kind of like how "Taco Bell" and "Netflix" always trend on Twitter around 2 a.m. But in what experts are calling the biggest upset in college basketball history, this year's Duke team starts zero white guys, they're incredibly fun to watch, and — this can't be right — they are easy to cheer for? Well, at least he's being honest. He hates White basketball players and wants to punch them in the face. Of course, everybody here has known that people hate Duke because of their White players. It just has never been so blatantly admitted by a major writer at ESPN. The fact that he feels safe to laughingly disparage and hate players based upon their race is what is incredible. There will be no backlash. This guy, Mark Titus, is a despicable piece of garbage. He doesn't know why he hates his own race? Maybe he should seek counseling, or see a doctor to make sure he still has a set of balls.

Joe Harris is the Aaron Craft of Virginia. He looks like a choir boy, it feels like he's been playing college basketball for seven years, and so much of his game is intellectual. I don't know for sure, but I'd be willing to bet that, like Craft with his Rubik's Cube–solving ability, Harris doesn't care that he'll likely never play in the NBA because he's going to make more money as a brain surgeon/lawyer/astronaut/Abercrombie & Fitch model anyway. There's a chance that he's actually kind of dumb, but I wouldn't bet against him being as smart off the court as he is on it

I know all about this idiot, I stumbled upon some of his "work" towards the end of last years college basketball season. He is a writer for "Grantland" you know, the other self hating whiteboy's website, Bill Simmons. He says that guys like Christian Laetner and Tyler Hansbourough, (and pretty much any other quality White player you can think of) have "punchable faces." Typical DWF who actually was a walk-on/benchwarming NCAA player for Ohio State. Club Trillion means getting 1 minute of playing time followed by zero points, zero shots, zero assists, zero rebounds etc, hence 1000000000. Thanks for the extra info. This guy is mentally diseased. Titus needs to go for a stroll down any MLK boulevard in any American city. It will give him a whole new perspective on "punchable faces" when he encounters a "friendly" pack of "youths" who are just "playing" their knockout game.

The fact that ESPN links to his and Bill Simmons' articles tells us all we need to know about them. They openly have a radically anti-White agenda. It's more crystal clear now than ever.

I agree; I couldn't believe what I was reading for a minute. I hope Duke crashes and burns this year. Them giving about 6 combined minutes to Murphy and Plumlee isn't nearly enough for me to support them. Maybe next year; Plumlee and Murphy will both be juniors(?), and the Dukies will have a new 2 guard recruit, Grayson Allen. So maybe next year, they'll start a paleface or two, so Titus can go back to rooting against Duke(and we can go back to rooting for them) and wanting to punch guys who would probably kick his ass any day.

a name i've not seen mentioned before carried Georgia Tech to their third-straight win versus intra-state rival Georgia, last night.

the ACC's active leader in blocked shots and one of the best offensive (and total) rebounders in the country, senior Daniel Miller went on the road and carried the Ramblin' Wreck on his back in the 80-71 win. Miller pulled down 13 rebounds and scored 14 points (on 6 of 9 shooting). he is a very solid big man, though he gets no media acclaim whatsoever.

GT also has a young point guard with a lot of potential. freshman Travis Jorgenson is very creative with the ball in his hands, either creating for his teammates or himself. he still makes plenty of freshman mistakes, but the talent is there. he is getting a lot of quality minutes off the bench, so expect him to improve greatly as the season progresses.

Nice to see GT playing a couple of talented white guys to make up for Duke not playing any.

A little follow up to the tidbit I had on the Gophers on the first page: The Gophers start two white guys, Elliot Elliason and Oto Osenieks, and give playing time to Wally Ellenson (whom Jimmy mentioned) and Joey King off the bench. Wow, the first year Tubby is gone and the Gophers go back to playing more white guys. Coincidence? I think not.

BYU has kept on rolling, with 2 blowouts against inferior opposition.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are another great team for CFers to cheer for. They start three white men, 7 footer Adam Woodbury at center, the high-flying (see Jimmy's post on the first page) Aron White, and point guard Mike Gesell. Off the bench for the Hawkeyes comes Wisconsin transfer Jarrod Uthoff, 2nd on the team in minutes, and the 2nd leading scorer (behind Aron White in both). Zach McCabe also comes off the bench for the Hawkeyes, as well as two guard Josh Oglesby (currently out with a foot injury). Iowa is one of the whiter teams in the Big 10, and should be primed to make the NCAA Tourney this year.

Butler has fallen off the media's radar, what with the sensational shooting of Rotnei Clarke departing due to graduation and the terrific coaching of Brad Stevens departing to the NBA. however, there is still some pretty good basketball being played in Hinkle Fieldhouse, and the future is bright.

6-foot-6 guard Kellen Dunham has begun to emerge from the shadows, and his game on Saturday in the win against Princeton provided some evidence of that. just a sophomore, Dunham finished with a game-high 26 points (on 7-14 shooting) while adding 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Butler starts 3 White players (Erik Fromm and Alex Barlow are the other two), and the Bulldogs give a lot of minutes to a couple more "overachieving gym rats" off the bench.

Virginia's Joe Harris is a favorite of mine, but he had a quiet night on Saturday in a win over Davidson. it was another talented young White athlete who was the star of the game.

sophomore big man Mike Tobey scored a game-high 18 points off the bench, while collecting 7 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. he's another young talent to keep an eye on.

junior Tyler Kalinoski shined in the losing cause for Davidson. Kalinoski, a 6-foot-4 guard, finished with a game-high 11 rebounds! he also added 13 points (on 4-8 shooting), 3 assists, and 2 steals with just 1 turnover in 37 minutes.

Syracuse guard Trevor Cooney, fresh off his ACC Player of the Week honor, scored 10 and had 3 steals as the Orange cruised past Colgate.

Wisconsin struggled against Green Bay, but the Badgers held on for the road win, 69-66. in the game, Wisconsin saw 5 White players with more than 20 minutes of action, including freshman point guard Bronson Koenig. this is a potentially huge development, as i've long despised the current Badgers' starting point guard Traevon Jackson. Koenig, the Wisconsin state Player of the Year last year, actually played more minutes than Jackson (23 to 18).

this is an intriguing storyline to follow for a couple of reasons. first, Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan almost never features important roles for true freshmen. and if Koenig emerges as a pivotal player (or perhaps even starter), it would be rare air indeed. secondly, if Koenig becomes the starter, it would mean an all-White starting five for the Badgers. how cool would that be?!?

i should also mention that sharp-shooting, but rarely-referred-to, 7-foot junior Frank Kaminsky was a powerful force in the win. he finished with team-highs of 16 points (on 6-12 shooting), 8 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Sam Dekker added 13 points (6-11 shooting) and 7 boards, and Josh Gasser chipped in with 11 points (2-8) and 6 boards. the aforementioned Koenig finished with 7 points (going a perfect 3-3 from the floor), 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot with just 1 turnover.

much like their superstar Doug McDermott, Creighton continues to fly under the radar. they went on the road on Saturday and knocked off Saint Joseph's behind a "quiet" 20 points (on 7-14 shooting) and 5 rebounds from the best player in the country. the bearded sniper, Ethan Wragge was the game's high scorer, knocking in 7 (of 11) three-pointers off the bench for 21 points. superb point forward Grant Gibbs finished with a stellar all-around effort: 11 points (on 5-6 shooting), 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Creighton starts 3 White men (McDermott, Gibbs, and Will Artino) and have 3 others (Wragge, Avery Dingman, and freshman Isaiah Zierden) who have appeared in all three contests and are averaging double-digit minutes. in fact, Wragge is second on the team in minutes played, despite not starting. the Bluejays are certainly a team to cheer for.

Oklahoma State has now played 3 games thus far this season, and 5-foot-11 sophomore guard Phil Forte has been the high scorer in every game … not only for his own Cowboys team, but also for the game. he has now scored 63 points in 66 minutes, all from off the bench. he is also averaging 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 steals with only 0.7 turnovers per contest.

just imagine what he could accomplish if he had some talent!!!

in a similar story to that of Forte (see post #40), UConn's senior guard/forward Niels Giffey continues to shine when on the floor, but continue to not get a starting nod.

in the Huskies' first 3 games of the season, Giffey came off the bench and scored 13 points (in 17 minutes), 15 points (in 20 minutes), and 15 points (in 19 minutes). during that 3-game stretch, he also only missed 3 shots TOTAL, connecting on an amazing 15 of 18 attempts from the floor.

with those numbers, you'd think he'd become a more pivotal focal point of the offense, right? wrong.

in today's contest versus Boston University, Giffey only had 2 shot attempts, hitting 1 of them, in 20 minutes. off the bench. again. you can't make this stuff up.

Notre Dame got knocked off at home by Indiana State. the Sycamores were led by the superb playmaking of lead guard Jake Odum. Odum finished with 10 points (2-6 shooting), 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals with only 2 turnovers.

it was a disappointing performance by the Irish, other than Pat Connaughton. Connaughton, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, finished with 16 points (5-10 shooting), a game-high 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot in the loss. he's an outstanding player.

a very dark Michigan was knocked off by Iowa State, with Mitch McGary coming off the bench in his first game back from a lower-back injury. he finished with 9 points (4-7 shooting), 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. "game manager" Spike Albrecht continues to do what he does: come off the bench and play highly efficient basketball whilst getting no hype. he finished with 7 points (3-5 shooting) and 3 assists with ZERO turnovers in 18 minutes.

the player of the game was Nik Stauskas, however. the lone White man in the starting lineup for the Wolverines, Stauskas finished with team-highs of 20 points (8-18 shooting) and 6 assists, while chipping in with 4 rebounds and only 1 turnover in 38 minutes.

Maryland's two White starters (and only two White men to see the floor) had strong outings in a loss to Oregon State. Jake Layman finished with 15 points (6-12 shooting), 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot with ZERO turnovers, and Evan Smotrycz had 16 points (4-11 shooting), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 blocked shot but 4 turnovers.

in the early season's "upset of the year" (so far), a nearly-all-White Belmont team went down to Chapel Hill and knocked off all-black North Carolina. woot!

Mann finished with a career-best 28 points. His last basket gave the Bruins (3-1) an 81-80 lead. The Tar Heels (2-1) had rallied from 11 down in the second half to lead by eight with about 4 minutes left. After Mann's basket, UNC's J.P. Tokoto missed a shot for the lead from near the top of the key. Drew Windler grabbed the loose rebound and threw it ahead to Caleb Chowbay, who scored on a breakaway layup with 0.2 seconds left to seal a stunning win.

When the horn sounded, Belmont's players spilled off the bench to celebrate near midcourt.

J.J. Mann celebrates with teammates

the Bruins started 4 White men, and 7 of the 8 players in double-figure minutes were "blue collar over-achievers." led by guard/forward J.J. Mann, these "gym rats" "wanted it more" and "studied their playbook" enough to beat the Tar Babies in their own house. yay!

Mann finished with a game-high 28 points (8-21 shooting) while pulling down a team-high 9 rebounds. he also had 3 assists and 1 steal in 39 minutes.

one of the 7 White men who were good enough to be the #12 team in the country is Northwest Arkansas native Nick Smith (Bentonville High School), an athletic 6-foot-8 true freshman who was not even recruited by the Arkansas Razorbacks (who suck something fierce). Belmont is certainly a team i can cheer for.

Jimmy, I actually think Iowa State's white player is Matt Thomas, haha I think Hogue is black. I remember seeing Hogue's name coming up on Iowa State's committ list, and I thought he would be another white player coming in along with Thomas. I was disappointed to learn that he was black.

Also, I was just about to post on Belmont's great win over the all-black Tar Heels (although Luke Davis played a lot today).

Belmont is very fun to watch as well. Here's to them having some tournament success this year! Tar Heel fans must've been obviously in disbelief watching these over-achievers school their athletic all-black team of future NBA players.

At times Belmont had what appeared to be 5 palefaces on the court, and usually had 4. UNC sent in a YT only every now and then. It was a game that should not be possible. If the CM media is to be believed, such a game cannot happen. There is not a single player on the Belmont roster that UNC would even offer as a backup plan. Carolina apologists will counter that they were without two key players, but their entire roster is supposed to be superior. Belmont looks like a team from the early 60s. What does a DWF do with a game like that? Oh, but the Tarheels did dunk the ball a lot harder, so they won that part of the contest.

I agree Awake, looking at the Tar Heel's roster, it's littered with these "4 and 5 star" recruits. You know, those guys that are supposed to dominated white teams like Belmont in their 1 or 2 years in college on their inevitable path to the NBA. Luke Davis surprisingly got 25 minutes tonight, but in those 25 minutes, he accumulated the massive stats of: 1 personal foul and 0/1 from the field. So his alleged "teammates" ignore him whenever he plays. Jackson Simmons is the other white man on the Tar Heels; he gets a couple of scraps here and there.


Also, another team for CFers to support this year is the New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos start three white players, with their talented frontcourt consisting of 7-0 foot junior Alex Kirk, who is an absolute monster inside. At the 4 is 6-9 Australian forward Cameron Bairstow, who is also a very talented player who can score points as well. Holding down a starting guard spot is Hugh Greenwood, also from Australia. I haven't seen enough of Greenwood to comment on him. Coming off the bench for the Lobos may be one of their more talented players: point guard Cullen Neal. This freshman is already playing major minutes for the Lobos, logging 26 in their win over Charleston Southern. He also dished out 7 assists to go with his 11 points, but did take his lumps with 6 turnovers. Neal has some potential, it will be fun to watch New Mexico this year: three white starters, and the 6th man is white. Don't expect it to last though, these guys comprise 4 out of the 5 white players currently on the Lobos roster. But this year, New Mexico should be a great team to root for this year.

Against Charleston Southern, Alex Kirk and Cameron Bairstow could not be stopped inside. Bairstow led the team with 29 points, and Kirk wasn't far behind, with 24 points. Kirk is also a monster on the glass, grabbing 13 rebounds to go with his 24 points.

And in our unfortunate saga of Phil Forte and Niels Giffey having to come off the bench for their respective teams, I've found another example: Brady Heslip of Baylor. Heslip, the deadly shooter who has carried the otherwise all-black Bears through the NCAA Tournament the last couple of years, now comes off the bench. He averages over 24 minutes a game, and he is also the leading scorer for the Bears as well, averaging over 16 points per game. What could Heslip do with some real talent?

Dunk City (aka Florida Gulf Coast) took care of business tonight, devouring a cupcake. a couple of noteworthy events took place, however.

1) the high-flying Eagles started 4 White athletes (Fieler, Comer, Nate Hicks, and Filip Cveticanin [not a typo!]), and all of them scored in double figures on over 50% shooting.

lead guard Brett Comer finished with a game-high 18 points (on 6-10 shooting) with 8 assists to 3 turnovers. Chase Fieler (who was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week prior to the game) totaled 15 points (4-7 shooting), 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 blocked shot. Cveticanin added 12 points, hitting 4 of 6 three-point attempts.

2) the player of the night was transfer post, Nate Hicks. Hicks finished with an ASTOUNDING 8 blocked shots, a game-high 9 rebounds, and scored 12 points (on 6-7 shooting) while committing only 1 foul and 2 turnovers. a VERY impressive performance for a big man.

for future reference when tuning in, Fieler is FGC's most talented player, but it is Brett Comer who makes the team go. when he plays well, they're hard to beat. but if he plays poorly, they're not very good. he's the only player on the team who can create for his teammates and handle the ball against pressure defense. when he struggles, look out.

Nice to see Dunk City continue to dominate!

We had a dominating performance by one of our athletes from an unlikely source: Czech forward Patrik Auda of Seton Hall. I don't know much about this kid, but he absolutely went off tonight against Monmouth. The redshirt Junior had 27 points on 8-9 shooting, and 9-9 from the charity stripe. Auda also had 10 rebounds. He did all this in only 22 minutes, by the way. I see Seton Hall also has a second white starter, Point guard Jaren Sina, only a freshman from New Jersey. In 28 minutes, Sina had 7 points and 3 assists. A third white player, Harilds Karlis from Latvia, also got in the game for 11 minutes. I wonder when the last time Seton Hall played three white men was?
