Yeah Jimmy, Illinois State did play some unselfish basketball yesterday. I like that you brought that up about Illinois. I knew they played at least three white players during the early season. But their free-fall is what they deserve for having these talented guys riding the bench for a lot of conference play.

Huge caste matchup in the Southern Conference Championship on ESPN2 with nearly all white Davidson against all black West Carolina. Right now, it's Davidson's 5 white players against 5 blacks for the Catamounts.

i'm glad you mentioned this game, Jack, as it's a good one to watch. i'm actually watching it now in favor of the Gonzaga-St. Mary's game which is also currently airing on another ESPN channel.

Davidson plays a very up-tempo style that is fun to watch. they play a rotation of 8 guys, only 1 of whom is black (if you count Jake Cohen as White; he is of jewish descent), and frequently have 5 White athletes on the court for long stretches. they also really share the ball well, as 5 players average more than 10 points per game.

i should also add that the negro commentator in the Davidson-Western Carolina game is making the game very difficult to watch. he is CLEARLY pulling for the all-black WCU squad.

in the Gonzaga-St. Mary's game, you have the match-up of the two best point guards in the WCC: junior WCC Poy Matthew Dellavedova of St. Mary's versus freshman WCC Newcomer of the Year Kevin Pangos of Gonzaga.

it's a nice night for some basketball.

There's also some good news in the Summit League. No.1 Seed Oral Roberts has been knocked out of the Tournament, and South Dakota State is currently playing against Southern Utah. I have the privelge of being able to watch the game on TV. :) Nate Wolters is looking real good for the Jack Rabbits as I'm flipping back and forth between them and Davidson. Oh, and I definlty count Cohen white.

The Jack Rabbits have a great shot to get into the NCAA Tournament tommorow if they can beat the Thunderbirds. To all you who haven't seen Nate, they could be on ESPN2 tommorow night.

i envy you, Jack. i wish i could watch that South Dakota State game. Wolters is VERY fun to watch.

in the game i'm watching (WCU-Davidson), the Western Carolina all-blacks are in trouble. they've played about as well as they're capable of playing, yet the evil White devils, er, i mean the Davidson Wildcats still have the lead at halftime.

unless something goes awry, Davidson should pull away in the second half.

is anyone watching the Gonzaga-St. Mary's game? it's tied at the half, but i've not seen any of it to know what's going on ...

SDSU's up only one on Southern Utah at halftime, 28-27, but the Thunderbirds have played some tough defense against Wolters and Co. The Jack Rabbits are on a local sports station here, which I've found to be very nice throughout the year; in addition to showing SDSU and bigger schools, they show a lot of High School games and smaller college games as well. But everyone should hopefully be able to watch SDSU and Wolters on ESPN 2 tommorow night.

The Davidson Wildcats are up 6 right now on the All-black Catamounts.

Jimmy, St. Mary's are up 4 right now 48-44, but the highest scoring white player is Matthew Dellavedova, with 10 points. I'd never thought this game would get to be so black, or in St. Mary's case, a lot of mullatos.

SDSU is now up by 12, 47-35 on the Thunderbirds, and everybody's been contributing for the Jackrabbits. Wolters has made several great plays in the first half, including nearly dunking the ball over a Thunderbird player. Wolters is an incredible athlete. The announcers on this netowrk are very fair, and fun to listen to.

The refs are really trying to give Western Carolina this game right now, they just called a foul on a 3 point shot to get the Catamounts to tie the game up. They've also been giving Davidson no calls in the last minute of the game.

what a bizarre ending to the second half in the Davidson-Western Carolina game ... Davidson's Whities were on cruise control, completely dominating the game until WCU's crazy 3-point heaves actually started going in ... off the backboard, falling down out of bounds, you name it. favorable calls and made free throws by a poor WCU free throw shooting team also figured into the equation.

anyway, the game is going to overtime.

every basketball game i've ever watched that featured a Blackie-Whitey matchup that was close down the stretch also featured a second characteristic: the referees swallow the whistle when Blacky hack-and-slaps (or "plays tough defense" as the commentators claim), yet they call everything when Whitey gets near a guy on defense (or as Jimmy Chitwood has dubbed it, a "playing defense while White" foul).

this WCU-Davidson game is no different.

that being said, Davidson has had their opportunities to win despite that, but they haven't knocked down shots or been strong enough with the ball to overcome the "physical" defense.

it's going to double overtime.

game over. Davidson wins in double OT. wow.

that was very close to the far-better team going home with a loss, but fortunately Whitey survived to win the Southern Conference Tournament title.

also, it was just a bit of icing on the cake that Davidson's (high-flying White) Mann sealed the deal with a thunderous two-handed dunk.

93-91 in double overtime for the good guys. so many performances tonight to discuss, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow, because i'm out for the night.

Davidson wins in a thriller in 2 overtimes, 93-91!! March Madness is already here!! It was a true team effort for Davidson to win. Jake Cohen had 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 blocks! De'Mon Brooks (black) and JP Kuhlman both had 19 points (Kuhlman also added 8 boards), and Nick Cochran had 16 points. Davidson should be a dangerous team in the tournament, but, as Jimmy said, they may have to deal with the "playing defense while white" if they get matched up with a black team.

South Dakota State also beat Southern Utah 63-47! Great night for our teams!

It was a great pleasure to watch Nate Wolters tonight against the Thunderbirds. He had his usual state line: 31 points (10-17 shooting, 10-12 FT), 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Jordan Dykstra is a very versatile big man who can hit three point shots, and seems to be SDSU's second option. He had 17 points and 4 rebounds(Wolters' 7 rebounds led the game!) SDSU is on ESPN 2 tommorow night against Western Illinois for the right to go Dancing. If SDSU gets hot from three, anything can happen for them in the Big Dance. SDSU's problem is that they don't have much height at all, with their tallest guy in Marcus Heemstra at 6-9, and he comes off the bench, so they do have a bit of trouble rebounding at times, but the Jack Rabbits are more athletic than ESPN could every give them credit for, especially Wolters.

tonight we have a pair of Championship games that feature caste match-ups. both play on one of the ESPN networks at 8:00, so pick your poison.

the Valparaiso Crusaders start 4 White men, and they play 6 White devils (which is funny since they’re the “Crusaders”) in their 8-man rotation.

their best player is Ryan Broekhoff, a 6-7 do-everything junior forward from Australia who leads them in scoring and rebounding, is a terrific passer, and is the team’s best defender. their other forward, 6-8 junior Kevin Van Wijk, is their next-best scorer and rebounder. he’s from the Netherlands. forward Richie Edwards provides firepower from long range off the bench.

starting guards Will Bogan and Ben Boggs are solid all-around players who contribute in a variety, even when not stuffing the stat sheet, as does Matt Kenny who usually comes off the bench.

they face off against Detroit which also has a deep bench, but only plays 1 White athlete.

in the other caste head-to-head, we see nearly all-White South Dakota State (who only has 1 black kid who regularly sees the court) against nearly all-black Western Illinois (who only has one White kid who regularly sees the floor).

the best matchup of the game will be between the two point guards. SDSU’s Nate Wolters, a junior, is the best player in the game (and one of the most under-rated players in the country), leading his team in points (21.5 ppg), rebounds (5.1 rpg), assists (6.1 apg), and steals (1.7 spg). he’ll be facing off against WIU’s best player, senior Ceola Clark III, who leads his team in points (13.6), assists (4.7), and steals (1.6). the winner of this head-to-head will likely determine the winning team, as both lead guards are the engines that power their respective team’s performances.

********************************

of the teams who have qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning their conference tournament titles, several feature White athletes as dominant figures.

* surprisingly-non-White Saint Mary’s’ best player (as well as the WCC’s) is junior point guard Matthew Dellavedova.

* UNC Asheville’s best player is senior guard Matt Dickey, despite an otherwise very dark roster.

* Davidson is obviously a majority-White team, as only one black player sees the floor for the Wildcats.

* Creighton features the explosive scorer Doug McDermott, arguably the best offensive player in the nation, as well as frequently having 3 White men on the court at a time (including 4 White athletes in the regular rotation), especially the deft-passing and shutdown defense of (Gonzaga transfer) Grant Gibbs.

* Belmont starts 3 White athletes, and their top reserve (who actually plays starter’s minutes) is another White kid.

********************************

an interesting side note … the two nearly all-White teams who are playing tonight (and Davidson who played last night) feature incredibly young rosters, with only one single White senior in the three starting lineups combined. how cool is that? if things develop as they should, all three teams should be even better next year.

******************************

one last thing to mention regarding the upcoming NCAA Tournament … another team that has gone largely under the radar is the Vermont Catamounts. they've won 22 games this year, and they’ll be playing for the America East Tournament Championship (and an automatic Tourney bid) on March 10. they only have one black player on their entire roster, so hopefully they’ll prevail against Stony Brook and do some things come Tourney time. of course, that's a big job for them to do.

Nice update, Jimmy.

Thanks for the info. I am not a big college b-ball fan anymore but get a little excited this time of year - especially when there are white teams to cheer for.

Jimmy thanks for the team info.

It's hard for me to watch basketball, even when the right guys are playing because the game is so dependent on ref calls, and the refs are caste-horrific when it comes to White/black matches. I think the NCAA has mandated different rule interpertations for blacks so as to justify schools having them on the rosters in the first place.

When I played in HS it was much different. In the White schools the White guys got the calls and in the black schools the black players got the calls. Now it seems that at the White schools the refs "err on the side of not looking racist" and give every call to the black players, and in the black schools the blacks get all the calls because the refs are scared sh*tless of the fans.

my pleasure, jax. and i've noticed the same thing about the officiating in black/White games. it's actually one of the reasons i get so excited about watching those types of matchups. it's like a modern-day version of the 300 movie ... White men against overwhelming odds. it makes it all the more impressive when they come away with a win.

in the SDSU-WIU game, Western Illinois has done a terrific job of slowing down the up-tempo Jackrabbits and squelching Nate Wolters' penetration with solid team defense and completely shutting down the Jacks' transition game. the tempo definitely favors the more deliberate, slower-paced black team.

that being said, they're only up 4 at the break. SDSU needs to make some adjustments in order to take advantage of their superior post play. or they could simply start knocking down some wide open perimeter shots. they've had those throughout the first half, and they simply missed them.

as a caveat, WIU's lone White player has played very well. he's a heck of a shooter.

okay ... it's time for SDSU to pick it up. they've gone 8 minutes of game play without knocking a shot down. you can't win a game without scoring. duh. if they don't get it together, they're going to be in trouble. as it is, there down 10 with 16 minutes left.

edited to add: check that, 10 minutes without a bucket.

FINALLY! Wolters scores. the lead is cut to 7. hopefully this is the spark that turns up the heat in favor of the Jacks.

give credit to Western Illinois. they've executed their gameplan to perfection. their help defense has been impeccable, as it's almost completely taken Wolters out of his game. meanwhile, SDSU's complementary players haven't made any shots.

all that being said ... we're going to overtime! go SDSU!

holy cow! South Dakota State escapes with a win, and i mean only by the skin of their teeth. they were completely taken out of their game by a stifling, conservative WIU defense, and the gambit almost paid off.

be that as it may, the Jackrabbits are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. their women's team is going for the fourth-straight year. a hat tip for not giving up to the SDSU Jackrabbits!

What a great game!! What a good day for South Dakota!! Wolters and Dykstra reaallly struggled today against a good Leatherneck defense. The rest of the players picked up the slack though, especially Griffan Callahan, who had some huge shots down the stretch. If the Jackrabbits get the right match up, I think they can do some damage in the tournament.

The State of South Dakota is really excited today!! :D

@ Jimmy, did you get a PM I sent to you?

unfortunately, Valparaiso stumbled in their conference championship game and got knocked off. after beating Detroit twice during the regular season, they couldn't manage to do it a third time.

despite jumping out to an early 23-14 lead, Valpo couldn't sustain the effort after starting forward Kevin Van Wijk went down with a thigh bruise late in the first half. at the time, he was perfect from the floor and had a game-high 12 points. he tried to gut it out in the second half, but he just couldn't move. his injury enabled Detroit to focus their defense on Valpo's other talented forward, leading scorer Ryan Broekhoff (the Horizon League Conference Player of the Year).

the defense sagged off the perimeter and dared the guards to make shots, and Valpo's backcourt was unable to meet the challenge. the Crusader guards were stone cold from long range, shooting a combined 1-15 from 3-point range and 5-for-24 from the floor. they also managed to combine for only 3 assists and 12 turnovers. ouch.

head coach Bryce Drew admitted that it was one of their worst performances of the year. it was a hard way to go out for such a normally solid team. i don't know what their chances of getting an at-large bid to the Tournament are (they won 22 games this year), but Valpo will at least make the NIT. even better news is that they're a very young team, and should be even stronger next season.

*************************

in related news, perhaps that is one reason why South Dakota State struggled with Western Illinois so mightily yesterday. the Jackrabbits had knocked off the Leathernecks twice before during the regular season, and it is awfully tough to beat a team three times in a row. regardless, i'm happy that the Jacks qualified for the Tourney. hopefully they can get the kinks worked out and make a Cinderella run.

That stinks about Valpo, but that was offset by SDSU getting into the Tournament last night!

Another majority white team that can get in is Bucknell. They're in a dog fight right now against LeHigh for the Patriot League CHampionship.
